The BYNC provides free ESL and Computer Skills classes to provide adults in the neighborhood with the tools they need to compete in the workforce. All classes are free.

English as Second Language

BYNC offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to residents of the Back of the Yards community. English language classes allow individuals to improve communication skills and master the English language. ESL classes are offered twice a day. Both sessions are held at the BYNC offices Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ESL classes are funded by the Chinese Mutual Aid Association and Illinois Community College Board. Classes are available to adults 18 years or older.

Computer Skills

The BYNC computer lab is open to adults in the Back of the Yards Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Computer skills courses allow users the opportunity to acquire basic skills necessary to operate a computer. The structured computer classes teach users a variety of skills including: using the mouse, creating and saving a file, opening files, closing files, setting margins, editing files, using different types of fonts and sizes, mastering the use of the printer, and being able to write basic letters and documents in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition to teaching users basic skills, we allow residents computer access to create resumes and apply for jobs.
